Mariakutty Koshy was born on May 14, 1944 in Thottumkara Malikaveetil in Puthencavu Chengannur to the late T.C Thomas and Aleyamma Thomas.  She was the youngest of the three children; her brother the late Chacko Thomas and her sister the late Aleyamma John. After high school she decided to pursue her nursing degree at M. G. M. Medical College and hospital in Bombay.

She came to the United States in 1973.  In 1975, she went back to India and married Koshy Jacob (Kulathin Karotte, Pandalam) on May 4, 1975.  God has abundantly blessed them to lead a happily married life for 46 years. She worked tirelessly to support her family back in Kerala and played a pivotal role in bringing both sides of the family from India to the USA.

Mariakutty started working at Willowbrook hospital, Staten Island. She then moved to Queens and worked at Elmhurst hospital, Deepdale Hospital, and finished her career at Creedmore Psychiatric Center.

In January 1997 she was diagnosed with cancer. Her strong will and faith allowed her to see major milestones such as her children’s graduations, weddings, and was able to enjoy her 5 grandchildren.

One of the foundational elements of her life was her faith in Christ and her devotion to the traditions of the Malankara Orthodox Church.  She was an active member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church in Puthencavu, Chengannur.  After reaching the United States she played an integral role in the formation and building up of several parishes. She was one of the founding members of St. George Orthodox Church, Staten Island. Afterward, she joined St. Gregorios Orthodox Church in Elmont, NY, and then went on to be a founding member of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Cherry Lane.

Despite her recent health issues, she always kept her steadfast spirit and Orthodox faith by attending church services and partaking in Holy Eucharist regularly. She passed away peacefully on August 28th surrounded by her family members.  Mariakutty will always be remembered for leaving an impression on whomever she met.

She is survived by her husband, Koshy Jacob, son Jijo Koshy, daughter-in-law Sheena Koshy, daughter Joan Cherian, son-in-law Shibu Cherian, and grandchildren Aaron Cherian, Elijah Cherian, Jonah Koshy, Luke Koshy and Hannah Koshy. She is also survived by her countless extended family and friends.
